2019 New Year Resolutions: Increase Personal Growth In Just 5 Minutes
Gimme 5! No not a high five… gimme just 5 minutes a few times per day and you can hit the reset button and re-energize yourself to increase personal growth. Because those New Year’s resolutions are right around the corner… and I want you to crush it in 2019.
But I get it… I can already feel you shaking your head in disbelief. Only 5 minutes a shot? What good will a lousy 5 minutes do for you?
Way more than you’d think.
Finally Be True To You (No More Lies)
After doing a quick search through Dr. Google, I discovered statistics that reveal that 80% of people will give up on their resolutions by February. Ouch… that stings don’t it?
So if the statistics are that bad, then why does almost everyone still set New Year’s resolutions like clockwork every year? 80% failure rate isn’t exactly an encouraging number. So why do we keep lying to ourselves? Because we want to believe this year will be different.
Whether it’s financial abundance, paying off debt, shedding 12 pounds or finally taking that trip to Australia… our resolutions normally focus on ways to increase personal growth. But the problem becomes that we place our personal growth goals inside of massively overzealous goals. And by February, 80% of people give up the ghost because the goal was just too big.
Instead, I’d encourage you to keep your focus on this “Gimme 5” principle of progress. Don’t worry it’s super simple to start using. You simple pick an activity or action that will increase your personal growth and set a timer for 5 lousy minutes… that’s it!
And for those 5 minutes (and those 5 minutes only) you put 100% focus on that activity. Maybe it’s to read a personal finance book on reducing debt. Or it’s doing 5 minutes of dumbbell exercises. But the key is you’re not trying to conquer the world… just 5 minutes.
When the timer goes off, you’re done. Guess what? You completed actions that move you closer towards your New Year’s resolutions… so that’s a big fat win for you. Plus you kept a promise to yourself (which is huge for your self-worth)
You said you’d do 5 minutes and you did it. Done and done! Which brings us to our next point.
Small Wins Open Big Doors
You see the supreme power behind taking these actions in only 5 minute chunks is that it very quickly helps you build momentum. And over each day and each week and each month, the compound effect is working in your favor.
Plus by tackling your bigger goals with these tiny 5 minute action bursts, you feel more in control of yourself. You also eliminate a huge amount of overwhelm and anxiety regarding your resolutions. You’re no longer looking at an entire mountain, you’re only looking at the first few steps on the path.
Now what’s really interesting is what starts to happen inside your mind as you keep knocking out your 5 minute chunks. Once you’ve done a few per day, you suddenly WANT to do even more. But rather than feeling as if you should do more, you actually are being pulled forward by your smaller successes.
Like I said above, small wins open big doors as you increase personal growth in 2019. So don’t let those little 5 minute bursts fool you… they’re your gateway to greatness.
Stack Or Scatter… It Don’t Matter
Now as simple as applying this “Gimme 5” concept might seem, some folks still can get tripped up as they begin to implement it. They start to wonder well do I do my chunks of 5 minutes in the morning or in the evening? Can I do one at a time throughout the day?
Listen… whether you stack a bunch together or scatter each 5 minute action burst throughout your day… it doesn’t matter. What matters is that you get stuff done… not the schedule you follow in doing it.
For example… let’s say you want to dedicate to 4 five minute action bursts per day. One for reading a marketing book, one for meditation, one for journaling and finally one for movement (like jumping jacks).
Now some people might want to do all 4 back to back first thing when getting up while others will stack them right after getting home from work. While others will complete one in the morning, one at lunch, one in mid afternoon and one right before bed.
Again… who cares how you get it done? Just… get… it… done.
So as you get ready for 2019, take a shot at using this “Gimme 5” idea as you keep a focus to increase personal growth. I guarantee you that chunking it up at 5 minutes a shot will make it much easier to hit your big, hairy audacious goals.
All it takes… is 5 lousy minutes.
